Customer Need
A Fortune 500 customer was losing the cost battle with a key competitor due to production at a legacy facility in a high-cost location. Decision made to transfer existing production lines to a lower cost, more flexible outsourced partner for the major components of a 5,000hp synchronous alternator. Customer required US location for top-level component production.
The project spanned COVID pandemic, forcing all production transfer and PPAP qualification to be virtual. Unionized legacy sites prevented on-the-ground knowledge transfer. Could not interrupt supply and shut down production during transfer. Needed both US production and better cost position.
Rockit Motors Solution
Split production between Plattsburgh, NY site and Mexico site for high-labor components.
- Invested $2M to reconfigure both sites to accommodate lines being transferred from Customer.
- Upgraded and re-commissioned Customer’s tooling and equipment and leveraged in-house engineering to design, build and commission additional custom tooling and equipment to upgrade line and provide redundancy to avoid production interruption.
- Hired Customer retirees with product knowledge to support the learning curve.
- Took over Customer’s exiting supply chain.
